How to Keep an RV Water Hose From Freezing

by | May 31, 2016 | Auto Parts

Cold weather brings with it a whole set of challenges, foremost of which is finding ways to keep your water hose from freezing. Here’s what you can do to make sure you don’t end up with a frozen hose:

Keep the furnace up and running

As long as the furnace in your RV works, then the water in your pipes as well as tanks shouldn’t freeze. So regularly check your furnace and keep it in tip-top shape with regular maintenance and repairs.

Store your hoses properly

Exposure to outside temperatures can work against your hose. To make sure it doesn’t, store them up properly. Empty out the hoses before you store them up. Disconnect and store your drinking water hose as well as sewer-hookup hose. You could also try to open the doors of your interior cupboards that contain your plumbing. This allows the hearted air from inside your rig to reach and circulate around the pipes, keeping them warm and warding off the chill and freezing effects of winter.

Use antifreeze

Start by emptying out your holding tanks. Once that’s done, pour in a couple of quarts of non-toxic biodegradable anti-freeze right inside your holding tanks. This should protect your dump values from freezing weather conditions. Then pour in more antifreeze when the wastewater fills the tanks. Next, pour the antifreeze into the gray water tank right through the shower drain as well. This should protect your drainpipes below the shower and keep them from freezing.

Conclusion

Cold weather can mean fewer vehicles on the road, which means ample campgrounds for you. That could make travel during the winter an excellent idea. Before you and the family go off on that adventure, make sure you do your best to prepare your RV for cold weather. That way, you can look forward to more fun and less heating problems on the road.
