What Are the Parts Involved?
Most wheel hub assemblies include a hub, a wheel bearing, an ABS (automatic braking system) speed sensor and a flange for mounting. The hub itself is what holds the wheel and the brake rotors to the vehicle and is mounted on the wheel spindle. It, along with the wheel bearing is what allows your wheels to turn freely. The majority of vehicles these days offer a one-piece assembly that includes the hub, bearings, speed sensor, and mounting flange. However, these pieces can also be purchased separately for older models.
How Things Go Wrong with the Rear Wheel Assemblies
When things go wrong with the assembly, it usually has to do with the bearings or perhaps the brakes. If you are hearing grumbling, grinding or squealing noises coming from the back wheel area of your car, it may have something to do with the rear wheel assemblies. The noise will be more apparent when turning the car in the direction of the side where the problem is.
The wheel hub is rarely the culprit as it is pretty much just one solid piece of steel. Most problems occur with the wheel bearings when they become contaminated by water, dirt or simply begin to wear out with age. Another problem can be caused by the ABS sensor that is built into many wheel assemblies.
Replacing the Assembly
Unless you are experienced with replacing parts on your rear wheels, you should take your vehicle to a repair shop that uses quality parts to replace rear wheel assemblies. If you have replaced the brakes on your vehicle, you will likely be able to make this repair as well, as it involves many of the same parts.
