The Ford Explorer, The First And Still Best SUV

by | Oct 24, 2017 | Auto Dealer

The Ford Explorer started it all; it was the first SUV and is considered by many as still the best. An Explorer seats seven comfortably in a richly appointed interior, has many hi-tech features and is strong. The standard drive configuration is front-wheel; a four-wheel drive version is available. The standard engine is a 290HP V6 but is available with a 280HP turbocharged four-cylinder engine as well as a 365HP twin-turbo V6.

A Ford Explorer in St. Charles can be configured in many ways; you can stick with a well-appointed basic trim level or go all out on unabashed luxury. With a choice of three engines, optional second-row captain’s seats and lots of cargo space, the Explorer is easily at the front of the SUV segment.

Plenty of power:

  • Ford does not make a lot of noise about the Explorers off-road ability, although it can handle rough and tough driving conditions, it is more akin to a family wagon. It is powerful, when equipped properly it can tow a 5,000 trailer, seat seven full-size adults with luggage and do it in comfort and luxury.
  • The XL and XLT models have a 290HP, 3.5L V6 engine that is used throughout the Ford range of vehicles. The base engine drives through a six-speed automatic transmission. Although it’s a V6 in a heavy SUV, don’t scoff, the engine is more powerful than some V8s from the past.
  • An optional engine that is attracting a lot of attention is the 2.3L turbocharged in-line four, this engine is closely related to the engines used in the Mustang and Lincoln MKC. It is an engine well worth considering.
  • The top-of-the-range engine is a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 rated at 365HP. This engine is standard on the all-wheel-drive Sport and Platinum trims.

Regardless of which trim level you choose, a Ford Explorer in St. Charles offers a wide array of useful features and high-spec materials are used throughout the cabin.
