Things to do to keep your bike in perfect condition

Although there are bikes which are built for certain purposes, bike repairs in Birmingham are usually along the same lines. Mountain bikes, road bikes and hybrids all have a frame, seat, handle bars, drive mechanism, wheels, etc. There are some bike repairs in Birmingham that are really only possible by skilled mechanics with the right tools, for example, installing spokes in a wheel where the wheel must run true once completed.

Almost everyone has enough in the way of skill to keep their bicycle in good shape and running well, for this you do not need to be a bicycle mechanic. Most small maintenance and repairs on a bike can be done in a matter of minutes with the most basic tools. To even overcome having to make any repairs, the best thing to do is to keep your bike in excellent condition as a matter of course, here are a few things that you can do to enjoy your bike and eliminate any unwelcome surprises while you are riding.

1. Make sure the air pressure in your tyres is correct. Tyres that are either overinflated or underinflated will not perform to their expectations. When you are adjusting and maintaining the air pressure, check carefully for any evidence of cuts or splits and check that the wheels do not wobble as this can indicate bearing problems.

2. Make sure the chain is lubricated frequently. Different bikes have different chains which in turn require different lubricants. Check with your local bike shop for a recommendation, perhaps the correct chain lube is noted in the owner’s manual.

3. From a safety point of view nothing is more important than the brakes. Test the brakes often as you ride, if you squeeze the brake lever to the maximum and the bike does not stop, the brakes either need adjusting or the rubber brake pads need replacing.

4. Keep your ears open for any strange noises, unexpected noises can indicate that a part of the bike has failed or something has come loose.
A few basic tools are all you will need to do bike repairs in Birmingham. A couple of screwdrivers, needle nose pliers and an assortment of Allen wrenches are about it, along with a tyre repair kit.
